Whom should we thank for the bloodshed and misery in Libya?

On 7 September 2011, Pepe Escobar, at Asia Times Online, reported that in Libya: The real war starts now

According to Pepe Escobar:

1. Leaked plans suggest there may soon be troops from Turkey on the ground in Libya.

NATO member Turkey is keen to get contracts in Libya.

There may also be troops from Jordan and various Gulf monarchies.

2. Libya's economy is 'paralyzed'.

3. Libya's ruling Transitional National Council (TNC) appears to be clueless, and a lame duck.

The new rulers are splitting into factions.

4. The Obeidi tribe has fallen out with the TNC.

The Obeidi tribe is unhappy about the assassination of army commander Abdul Fattah Younis.

Chief suspect in the killing is the Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah brigade.

The Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah brigade regards both the TNC and NATO as "infidels".

5. The Libya Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), linked to al-Qaeda, may attack the TNC.

Some militias want the LIFG's Abdelhakim Belhaj sacked as leader of the military in Tripoli.

The LIFG may soon be fighting the TNC, other militias, or both.

6. In Tripoli, rebels from Zintan, in the western mountains, control the airport.

Rebels from Misrata control the central bank, Tripoli’s port and the Prime Minister’s office.

During the 1930s about 25,000 Jews lived in Libya.

7. Libya can be seen as a new Lebanon.

The war in Lebanon began when each neighborhood in Beirut was carved up between Sunnis, Shi’ites, Christian Maronites, Nasserites and Druse.

8. Large numbers of Salafis, who fought in the Sunni Iraqi resistance against the US, have been freed from prison.

9. The African Union (AU) will not recognize the TNC.

It charges the NATO rebels with the indiscriminate killing of black people.

Reportedly, one-third of the population of Libya is black.


10. The very large southern Libyan desert has not been conquered by NATO.

The TNC has no access to virtually all of Libya’s water and a lot of oil.

Gaddafi can easily base guerrillas in the southern desert with a safe haven in Algeria - or even in Niger.

11. NATO dropped at least 30,000 bombs over Libya killing many thousands of Libyans.

Soon NATO may be targeting more civilians.
